Monster's sub-brand, Beats by Dr Dre, has been one of the more copiously successful headphone brands of the past year or two.
This isn't enough to prevent the Solo HDs being an enjoyable and invigorating listen, but it does mean that they can't be considered a default choice.

Reservations about their bass response are brought to the fore with a change to The Beatles' You Never Give Me Your Money, though. There's a rather soft, ill-defined quality to low frequencies and a consequent lack of detail and texture.

Now it's the turn of the Beats by Dr Dre Solo HD to show what they're made of.
Separation is good, with a convincing, sizeable soundstage lucidly organised, and nicely linear response all the way up and down the frequency range. The balance between attack and control is judged well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the Beats offer all the bite and crunch the material demands.
An uncompromising listen
In use, though,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they're a purposeful and uncompromising listen. Pander to them a little, with The Pharcyde's Ya Mama,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the Beats' drive and momentum are impressive.
Otherwise, it's the typical Beats finish but on a smaller scale – the comfortable ear-cups have plenty of articulation, the hefty detachable cable has iPod/iPhone control and telephony functionality, and the Solo HDs fold away neatly when not in use.

Quite apart from adorning the neck of every perspiring Premier League footballer seemingly by contractual obligation, the models we've reviewed have received verdicts of either ‘good' or ‘really very good indeed'.
‘Plastic' is the smart-alec answer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it is at least a very good grade of plastic and it's complemented by some nice foam padding.
