Most of the time, I believe in the total separation of video games and reality. That’s why I like gaming, after all…it’s a nice break from real life, and there’s more room for creativity than in other forms of entertainment. But there are two aspects of Telltale Games’ Puzzle Agent HD that I would like to believe are true. 1.) That the U.S. government has a Department of Puzzle Research, and 2.) that there’s a city in Minnesota that would require a special investigation by a representative of this department. And that representative may as well be named Nelson Tethers, convert mp4 to mp3 for mac, right?
What is it?
Puzzle Agent HD is a collection of puzzles tied together by a plot that would do David Lynch (or at least the Coen Brothers) proud. You control Nelson Tethers,mp3 to m4a, an agent sent to Scoggins, Minnesota to determine what happened at the Scoggins Eraser factory. The government needs its erasers, after all, and they aren’t coming.

Upon arriving in Scoggins, Nelson immediately notices that something is quite wrong. The citizens are all preoccupied with puzzles. Gnomes are missing. Strange sounds are coming from the forest. It seems everyone has something to hide, and everyone has a puzzle to solve.

How does it work?
Puzzle Agent HD mainly bounces between two components: story and puzzles. The story is quite linear, guiding you directly from one puzzle to the next. There’s never a point in the game where you’re wandering around trying to figure out what to do.

You’re presented with options during dialogue with the citizens of Scoggins, but you can’t ask the wrong thing or miss something important by going out of order. Although this is a charmingly creepy little story, Puzzle Agent HD obviously wants the puzzles to take center stage.

You’re presented with many of them, most of which tie into the moment. The hotel clerk is missing a gnome from her collection, convert dvd to iphone mac, so you help her figure out which one. A waitress can’t recall which diner ordered what meal, so you help her sort it out. An electrician needs the proper fuse to fix a light, so you have to figure out his coding scheme.

The style of puzzles varies greatly, making Puzzle Agent HD a great game to play with others. I had no problem with the spatial relations puzzles, but always had to defer to my wife on the logic puzzles and brainteasers. If you have no one to help you out, you can always chew gum. Gum helps Nelson think, which in this case means you can use it to get hints. The gum is scattered throughout the various locations, so the more of it you find, the more hints you can get.
Is it contagious?
Very. Between the puzzles and story, it’s easy to get completely wrapped up in this game for an hour or two. Unfortunately, that may be enough to finish it. Puzzle Agent HD goes by quite quickly, but it’s expertly done throughout. The graphics are basic, but fun, like a good comic strip. The sound effects and voice acting are fantastic. The pacing is perfect, with no hiccups or video problems to interfere with the fun.

The only problem I had, and this is a slight one, is that the instructions for each puzzle weren’t always clear. On a couple, I initially got my submissions rejected simply because I didn’t fully understand the rules. But that’s not enough to temper my enthusiasm for Puzzle Agent HD. It’s a great game, expertly made, and it’ll leave you wanting plenty more.
